"Cutting it" Extract

Cutting it extract- gender

Mise en scene

In the first scene we are introduced to the two main characters as they are sitting in a car, as we don’t see any of the two driving, we must assume they are in a taxi. The man takes the woman’s hand and kisses her hand or almost it seems as if he is kissing her ring to signify their recent change in their relationship with each other, as the characters first speak to each other it's as if one is trying to out talk the other. The woman says: "second time lucky" then the man replies with "don’t you mean third?" and the woman’s facial expressions drop, she then says "I’m sorry i had to do that to you" which she says it facing away form the man looking out the window, this could imply she is of embarrassment and to spare the judgment, from what is seemed to be her 'partner' of some sort, she looks away to avoid making eye contact. After the man says "dont you mean third?" he then says "or didn't fin count?" this obviously implies that the woman was cheating as he then mentions sins. As the woman then mentions her knowing about "melissa" which she says it looking down to show that she has been wanting to get it off of her chest for a while. During the time where the woman is in the building, as the man is waiting outside, he keeps touching his ring which shows he could be anxious for some reason, he remains this way until the woman says "guess what" and he seems to be even more anxious now as he doesnt know what to expect, and as the train crosses, he seems very impatient in waiting for it to go past until he hears the car crash, which his face expressions then change very quickly. By the woman of where she is laying on the floor, there is a flower shop right next to it which there seems to be a fairly large amount of flowers spread out on the floor, this also shows signs that something had been there.

Camera

In the taxi scene, as the woman says "I’m sorry i had to do that to you" the camera is positioned of a close up of the mans face just after she says this. She then says "I’m sorry i never trusted what we had" while simultaneously saying this, the camera is used to show the mans facial expression as she says this through a close up of his face, his eyes look down to show doubt in his mind or something as she is clearly apologising. when they seem to have made up in the taxi, there is a tracking shot of the womans hand moving from hers to the mans, this could show acceptance of some sort. Later on in the clip when the woman is in the building, one of the main shots we see to introduce the scene of the room is by a high angle shot of the whole room, we then first see that she is crying by the camera moving from the bottom of her body to the top which ends in a close up of her face so we can clearly see she is crying. when the woman is hit by the car and the man starts running over, there is a very short time which there is a first person shot of the man running over, it then cuts to third for a brief moment and then back to first where we definatley know this as a hand is reaching from the side of the screen to touch the woman which she then looks straight into the camera.

Editing
The pace in which the shots cut to are fairly average speed, but they mainly cut as each character takes turns in talking, the cut to the opposite person who is speaking at most times, for example when the woman admits she knows about a woman called melissa, the camera cuts straight to the mans face. When the woman is in the car crash, the camera doesnt cut to her untill the bus has fully gotten out the way, then the camera cuts to the man getting up and running over, from here on, all shots are cut fairly quickly as it often goes from first person to third and back fairly frequently. just as the clip comes to an end there is a fade out and the music remains constant in volume.

Sound

Throughout this clip there is little non-diagetic sound, in the clip, and the music doesnt actually start untill the woman enters the building as it creates a sort of montage effect as it shows the man waiting opposite the building. The music is of a fairly slow paced tempo but has got alot of instruments in it, seeing as there is no diagetic sound during this time, its used to take your mind off of the sound and just focus on the visuals. when the woman gets hit by the car, the second the man realises, there is an instant heart beat effect which adds suspence to the shot. There is also heavy breathing aswell to add to the suspence, just as he runs over, the audio is instantly cut and we dont hear anything untill he almost gets hit by a car himself and we hear a car beeping at him, from then on, the sound is back as he talks to the dieing woman. as he talks to the woman, non- diagetic sound starts and just as the woman closes her eyes there is a hit of deep instruments in the soundtrack, almost like bass, from this we can tell she is gone. during this time of the increased volume of the non diagetic sound, we can still hear the man crying even though the camera is positioned quite distant from the man.
